Fractured Focus
Senior Show
Fractured Focus explores my life with attention deficit hyperactive disorder or ADHD and how those with this disability experience it. My goal with this body of work is to illustrate to neurotypicals what I and other neurodivergent people deal with regarding ADHD. It is also to show people with this disorder that they are not alone in what they are feeling and give guidance to those who know someone with ADHD.
When I was in second grade, I was diagnosed with ADHD. At the time, I didn't understand what it was but I knew that I needed a little more help to understand the subject matter. As I grew older, I developed methods to better manage my life that have helped me to deal with the world around me. This show is about my daily life, whether it be my dependence on medication, my lack of emotional control, feeling isolated when surrounded by friends or family, or not being able to rest because my mind won't turn off.
Shown here are self-portraits going through the experiences listed above. Each piece has a custom background that is digitally created: drawing inspiration from 20th-century wallpaper designs and a 2D representation of the subject matter of the piece. These designs all explore a certain aspect of the work through a visual element or piece of data found in a medical study. Through this work, I hope to give insight into what a person with ADHD is experiencing.
